My Demon - Yay or Nay?

We all have heard a lot of scary stories about ghosts and demons. But, if the demon is anything like Jeong Gu-won, I have no problem having one around me at all times. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you have to crawl out from the rock you’ve been living under, go to Netflix, type “My Demon,” and binge-watch it because it is my ongoing obsession. Give me five minutes of your reading time, and let me convince you, no spoilers, about why it will soon be yours, too.

My Demon is a fantasy-romance-mystery show about a two-hundred-year-old demon named Jeong Gu-won who is impossibly gorgeous and immortal. He finds people at their most desperate stage and makes a deal with them - he will grant them a wish they most want, with the only catch being that in exchange, they will die after ten years and go to hell. He has stopped himself from feeling any human emotions, focusing just on collecting souls and making more deals. However, everything changes when he temporarily loses his powers and meets Do Do-hee. Do Do-hee is a very successful but cold and closed-off CEO of a company called Mirae F&B. A series of unfortunate events happen in both their lives, culminating in a contract marriage between Do Do-hee and Jeong Gu-won. Though seemingly simple, the plot has so many twists and turns in store for you that you won’t be able to remove your eyes from the screen.

Things to love:

  1. The romance: This drama has some of my favorite tropes of all time - enemies to lovers, forced proximity, and fake marriage. To top it off, the chemistry between Song Kang (Jeong Gu-won) and Kim Yoo-jung (Do Do-hee) is off the charts. Every interaction between them will have you gushing!

  2. The mystery: My Demon seems like a simple fantasy romance on the surface, but the mystery in the story is riveting. Every episode ends with a cliffhanger that you don’t expect. You can’t stop watching without knowing what happens next. I won’t reveal anything, but the ending of Episode 12 had me SHOOK.

  3. The cinematography: My Demon is a stunning show. The aesthetics and sequences are gorgeous and so well crafted. By the end of Episode 1, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. The pattern between all the final shots of each episode is *chef’s kiss*.

  4. The writing: This drama is still airing, but so far, there are no loopholes. Everything makes sense at every point. Even though there are multiple plot lines intertwined, it’s easy to understand, and you never feel lost. Plus, despite the heavy themes of the show, it has humor and comedic elements peppered throughout which land smoothly.

  5. The acting: I have watched Song Kang in Nevertheless and Love Alarm, but something about him in this role screams perfection. He was born to play Jeong Gu-Won, and hearing him say “Naneun demon-iya” in every episode is what I live for. Kim Yoo-jung as Do Do-hee is brilliant. Her eyes are so expressive and I want her entire wardrobe. Other actors like Lee Sang-Yi, Joo Hye-joo, and Kim Tae-Hoon, among others, do a brilliant job of playing their characters, ones that you’re always suspicious of.

  6. The OST: This show is one of the only few shows where I have not pressed “Skip Intro” and watched it diligently. The OST is broody, intense, and oh-so amazing. You’ll find yourself humming the songs without even realizing.

Things to hate:

  1. Absolutely nothing.

If you liked shows like Doom at Your Service, Hotel Del Luna, or Goblin, you will love My Demon. The show is still airing, with new episodes releasing every Friday and Saturday. Episode 12 is where we’ve stopped this week and Episode 13 will be out on January 12. It’s available on Netflix.

Current Rating: Yay, 10/10.
